Post TC Lola structural damage assessment
Tropical Cyclone Lola severely impacted South Maewo and South Pentecost in October 2023. CARE International, under its “Build Back Better and Safer” approach, assessed damage to schools and evacuation centers. The mission identified structural damages, prioritized rebuilding efforts, and provided recommendations to enhance resilience in coordination with provincial authorities.
Our Solutions
In November 2023, following a three-week field assessment across Maewo and Pentecost, BildBeta evaluated the structural integrity of 118 school buildings and assessed shelter resilience. Two detailed reports—on school damage and shelter response—were produced and presented to local authorities, INGOs, institutions, and clusters. BildBeta reviewed the role of CARE-trained Shelter Focal Points, analyzed the implementation of Build Back Better strategies, and identified gaps in emergency and recovery efforts. These efforts resulted in actionable recommendations for the MoET, including repair priorities, reinforcement designs, and resource mobilization strategies, to strengthen resilience and recovery planning.
